SplitSPLIT is the second biggest city in Croatia. Rich archaeological findings tell us about the people settling back in old Roman times, but the most significant trace to today’s Split is by all means left by the Roman emperor Diocletian. The Roman emperor started building his palace (of about 30 000 m²) in 295 where he withdrew after his abdication in 305 wanting to spend the rest of his life in the palace.
The following turbulent centuries transformed the palace into a town that was first settled by the citizens of Salona, fleeing before Avars and Slavs. The authorities in the city kept changing for centuries while the city was starting to spread outside the walls of the palace. There are also a lot of other sights worth seeing in Split.
